Bessie Myron, 86 has written this account of the experiences of her grandparents when they came to the United States in 1841. The article is entitled "The Struggles of Pioneering in the Life of the Myran family"
Grandfather left Norway with his wife and two sons, one was 2 and one was 41/2 years old, in the year of 1841, to sail for the United States. With him he also took enough provisions to last, as he thought, for a long voyage. It was to last much longer, all of the 18 weeks before they reached New York. Their food rations became so small in the last three weeks of their journey, that the captain of the ship gave them as liberal amounts of sugar as his fast-dwindling supply could spare. Their youngest son died on board ship and was buried at sea.
After landing in New York they rode on the so-called canal boats or barges as far as Buffalo, New York, whence they hired oxen part way and canal boats part way, arriving in Milwaukee after nine more weeks of travel. In passing Chicago they saw three houses - that was all. From Milwaukee they traveled 22 miles to Muskego. Wisconsin was then a territory. Grandfather lived at Muskego for 12 years, working at ordinary labor at 25 cents a day, working from early dawn till dark at night, having no watch and no limit on the hours by the bosses.
In Muskego, two sons were born to them, John and Andrew, who later were baptized in the old Muskego log church. Grandfather, with his family, escaped the epidemic of cholera which took so many lives. He did have the ague or climate fever.
He then moved with his family to Winchester and settled on part of the Winnebago Indian Reservation, a 40 acre farm which he operated under many hardships. They each had a few head of cattle behind their wagons. (sitat slutt)
