Notater - Obituary
The Seattle Times, March 21, 1975, page 53:
Marcus Otnes, survivor of 1906 tragedy, died
Services for Marcus Otnes, 99, one of the two final survivors from the 1906 sinking of the steamer Dix off West Seattle, will be tomorrow in the Wiggen & Sons Mortuary. He died Tuesday in a Seattle nursing home.
Forty-two of 77 passengers aboard the Blakely-bound Dix died November 18, 1906, in the collision with the Alaskan steamer, Jeannie, two miles west of Duwamish Head.
Mr. Otnes and one other survivor, Mrs. Alice Simpson Bassett, were guests of honor two years ago at a historical-marker ceremony at Duwamish Head.
Mr. Bassett lives with her husband, John E., in Bremerton.
Mrs. Bassett, then 13, and Otnes, had clung to the sinking steamer?s bobchain until rescued.
Mr. Otnes, a retired member of the Fishing Vessel Owner's Association, was a commercial fisherman for 39 years until 1941. His 50-year-old halibut vessel, the Bertha, is operated by two sons, Fred and Pete Otnes of Seattle.
Mr. Otnes had been a widower since 1941.
Interment will be in Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery.
